OUGD505 Brief 1 - Landmarks

British landmarks are a staple to British history. The term landmark means something that stands out and is visible from a distance, landmarks are often points of interests for locals and tourists. Some of the most famous landmarks in britain include:

Big Ben
The tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, was given the nickname big ben - it is not confirmed but big ben is said to be named after the man who oversaw the installation of the great bell inside big ben. Big Ben is attached to the parlimentry buildings in london is the 2nd largest 4 faced clock tower in the world, and is one of the most iconic landmarks all over the world.

Stonehenge
Stonehenge is approximately 4,500 years old, the landmark is a series of large stones pillared onto one another, many have theories about the reasoning behind stonehenge mainly the theory of spirituality and the studying of the moon and sun. The monument can be seen miles away.

Blackpool Tower
Blackpool tower was built in 1894, it was inspired by paris' eiffel tower. The tower stands at at 158metres high. The tower itself hasn't much history but it is well loved by British residents and its approximately the 103rd free standing tower in the world. The tower can be easily seen from wales on clear days.

Eden Project
Eden project is the largest indoor rainforest in the world, this man made forestation is incredibly popular and well known for its bubble like architecture. This is a popular destination for tourists located near cornwall.



Angel of the north
This sculpture created by Sir Antony Gormley is one of the most popular destination in the north the giant sculpture can be seen miles away and you can go ahead and take a further look.

"The work is made of corten steel, weighs 200 tonnes and has 500 tonnes of concrete foundations. The mound near the A1 motorway which was the designated site of the sculpture was made after the closure of the Lower Tyne Colliery, out of the destroyed remains of the pithead baths. It is a tumulus marking the end of the era of coal mining in Britain."




There are many more landmarks dotted all over England but these are some of the most popular and well known landmarks all over the world.
