OUGD406 Brief 2 - Study Task 3

Study Task 3

Based on the previous two study tasks, design an appropriate
typographic treatment for the book cover of your given book,
consider the following:
• If your adjectives (descriptive words) from your analytical discussion are negative then define the derivative:
Words I want to communicate; Legible, personal, pleasant, modern
(possibly), clean and classic
• Chose a Typeface(s), which is representative of your feedback
I looked at only a few typefaces in the 15 minute task such as; Helvetica,
Garamond, Bodoni and poster Bodoni although looking at these fonts I
didn't think they represented what I wanted to communicate. I chose to
focus of the layout and positioning for my type task.
• Define a hierachy of information (author/title/subtitle)
I would say only the title is important or defiantly the most important after that
the editors and the introductions although I feel they are less important as they
edited not wrote the essays in the book. But i still believe there must be credit
for the editors maybe not on the cover though.
• Chose type style/size/alignment appropriate to your above decisions
I decided to blow my type right up to connote the literal meaning of looking
closer. I didn't consider the alignment and if to develop this fourth I would
either centre or left align to make a statement of authority.
• Work in only Black and White and at A4 scale
• Purely typographic no symbols or imagery

I chose to use helvetica Vignelli's 6 typefaces although I don't think this fits
the book other then the movement to the era. I chose to use the lightest gradient
of black/grey to make the type barely visible to also reference to the literal
meaning of the title although I think the gradient is successful in creating a
meaning the typeface is not what I envisioned I would have to experiment
further to see what is fitting.

Feedback - Write a word or sentence to represent the book cover.

Some of the words/sentences on my feedback sheet were;

  • Foggy
  • Bleak
  • Invisible
  • Clever hard to read
  • Eye catching attention grabbing
  • Smart but not functional
  • Simple
  • Conceptual
  • Literally look closer
I agree with majority of my feedback although I disagree with it being
not functional because in my opinion function does not necessarily need to
follow form in the case of my design.. also it is readable but it is hard to
see and that being the main point of having to look closer and I feel it
is informed clearly by this.
