OUGD406 Brief 4 Final

Final Outcome

This is my final outcome I am proud to have finished but also
disappointed with the results,  Overall I feel that it does fit the
purpose of the brief as it can successfully help organise your
time providing you stick at it but personally feel I could of done
better in this project and this is due to my poor time management…
hopefully I can use what I made this year to help me manage my
time next year..

Iv created two note pads for daily managements and jotting notes
that could come in use. Iv packaged these into a box which fits
perfectly although the design is bright it consists with the vibrance
of the note pads I created.

Though my design suits a lively personalitiy it is versatile enough
to be used on a more subtle palette for different personalities as many
people have different tastes.

OUGD406 Brief 4 - Box

Net

To create my net I considered the sizes of my note pads in all aspects..
Its a really basic net but hopefully it should work, because I can then
add a design which is consistent to my current project.

Iv created only a small amount of variations in design due to the time
I gave my self which is ironic when the project is about
managing time - I dont feel I have done as well on this brief as others.

As shown I have changed my net throughout the design as when creating
mock ups the stability hasnt been very good by adding extra flaps to the
design it has strengthened the box.

I do not like the overall look of my design if i am brutally honest
I feel I could of done better if i had managed my time better I would of
considered a less garish design and maybe a different stock such as acetate.
I feel If i were to re-design this again it would be so much better.

I feel because I made this mistake I can learn from it next year.

OUGD406 Brief 4, In Context

To show how my idea is versatile I have used a cork board to pin
unfinished work onto from the week this meaning I don't forget what
I still have left to do. Id of liked to of created sticky notes so they can be
applied not only on a cork board but anywhere but given the time
a professional finish of sticky notes would be extremely difficult I would
like to know the process behind making sticky notes it was suggested
I could used double sided tape on the notes to give an example of how they
could be reproduced in the future.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Further Developments.

I have created 3 separate note pads for the final crit all with a
different purpose the first with just mon-fri notes In I felt this was
simple and would keep it less complicated I still felt the notes pages where
useful so I created a separate pad for notes meaning you could access as
many  as you needed , Although I liked the outcome I felt that it lacked
character and connection to graphic design students as at first my idea
was to add jokes and motivational designer quotes I felt this may be over
cluttered but after the first mock up I decided it was not best so I added
the notes and jokes in to ask what the rest of my peers opinions were.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Bind method

To make my note pad quite simply a note pad I have chosen
to bind it using a clamp and armed to the teeth with pva glue
I have used a hard card base to keep the bad strong a durable
I start the bind by applying a thin layer of glue when it drys
I then apply several more an so on until the bind becomes
strong but still able to be peeled off so that I can eventually
when dried peel off a day and use it for the day ahead.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Stock

The reason for my stock is quite simple, I chose to use brightly
coloured stock to make it eye catching and fun I felt if it was
plain and too dull you are less likely to look at it when you have
work to finish not only that I have colour coded the days so in
time you can remember the colour to the day and remember which
needs doing first.

For monday I chose to use yellow this is because everyone hates
mondays but they're important yellow stands out the most to me personally
and reminds me of happiness and sun/warmth with these connotations
I thought it would improve the motivation for doing the work on
Monday.

For tuesday I chose shocking pink, Tuesday is not that exciting but
it should be its the 2nd day of the 5th meaning your one step closer
to the end of the week. Pink has similar connotations to yellow such
as happy, love, fun. etc.

Wednesday I could orange, personally orange is my fave colour
and wednesday is my fave day so i combined the two I also feel
it is also a positive colour.

Thursday is green because its not long til you've finished for the
week green symbolises health, wealth, growth and fresh.

Friday is blue as it connotes relaxation and what better day then
to relax.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Printing & Refining

Once I had finalised my design it was important for me to think of
the production and layout on which it could be used. To calculate the
amount of notes needed for a term/year/month etc I worked out the
exact amount of weeks including time off as speaking from experience
I continue working throughout to keep stimulated and on schedule.

In total I have worked out using the studio calender that;

(NOT INCLUDING WEEKENDS, the reason I chose to not use weekends
in my design is because I felt it is key to keep a healthy balance between
work and relaxing providing you follow your notes your weekend could
easily be work and stress free if you work hard enough.)

In term 1/2 there are approx 15 weeks in total including holidays.
In term three there is 8 weeks.
In the college year that means approx 38 weeks

In term there will be 75 days
if notes and jokes/motivational quotes there will be in total 105 notes in the pad

In the school year there will be 190 days
In the note pad in total including jokes etc there will be 266 notes.

From my calculations I have decided that the lesser of the two is preferable
to keep it portable having the whole year on one pad could be daunting and
also heavy to carry around and nobody wants to be carrying round a giant
note pad.

For print I have fitted approximately 12 of the same days on the same sheet to save
printing cost. To create my note bad I have cut out every single day and piled them on
top Im not sure how I could improve this I could use the laser cutter or something
to reduce time but then again the laser cutter takes time to process and also leaves
marks from where it has singed the design to cut it.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Developments

While my design idea is very simple it is important to create
the right look and feel so I decided to ask my peers what they thought
worked best and which design they preferred overall.

I asked about typeface choices and layout, the reason for this is to
find the best way of creating a successful organisation tool for first years,
to get a conclusive answer I asked people to tick their favourite
and any comments if necessary most voted for hand written type
and 'due on' set up.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Interim Crit

After presenting my idea to the group they said that this idea
would benefit first years organising time alongside 2nd, 3rd even
others, to extend the content rather than just days of the week I will
add graphic design relevant jokes and motivational quotes.

I would also need to consider wether I would make the note pad for
the whole year or the term or the specific module as realistically a whole
year would be rather unportable then say the term as I can imagine the
stack would be incredibly large for a year.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Ideas

So to create something that helps first years manage time I have
looked at memo pads and organisers in shops and online. Places
such as paper chase and john lewis have a variety of time managing
stationary, I looked in other places such as TKMAXX and Wilko
although I felt some of the designs in here were quite dated and
definitely not aimed at graphic design students. I felt the best way of
getting started was taking inspiration from my current organising pad
which inspired me to create a smiler and less daunting time management
plan.

Current time manager.

Initial ideas.

A daily note pad to record what you need to do for the day
or near future.

As personally I feel sometimes when stressed I lack motivation
to eradicate this I felt I could add simple design jokes and
quotes to keep first years motivated through the year.

Another Idea I considered was to create a A2 sheet which
could be laminated and placed on the wall it could then act
as wipe board and be re used constantly for every day.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Research (Primary)

I have asked friends and family how they manage there time here
are some of the responses to the questions below;

How do you manage time? and how/or does it help?

  • Hattie Windley I have a planner that I write deadlines in and write to do lists so
I have a reminder every time I check my planner

  • Nikita Knott I have a planner and I write all my deadlines in then I also how much
time I will spend on them each day. But I make sure I have time for myself and friends

  • Becky Silveira make lists in my notebook and plan things out in my head helps
writing things down, but mainly to get it out of my head and check back on rather
    than to follow

  • Phoebe Heald Plan out scenarios in my head, which then helps me to understand
roughly how long things should take

Sian Rycroft I write to do lists and day plans and put them on the fridge, everything is
official when its on the fridge! (Cant forget/not be reminded then)
  • Also have them in my notebook and in my little notebook in my pencil case

  • Beth Oldfield I wait till the last 2 weeks and realise.. Fuck.. I finish in 14 days.
That makes me do work hahaah

  • Kealey Rushworth I have this weekly planning whiteboard stuck to my fridge and when
I remember to use it, it works! Hahaa

  • Stephanie Womack List and block out time on diary. Reminders, alarms etc

  • Holly Brodie Aim to get them finished 2 weeks before, and do studying little and often.
Make notes in everything you research as it might come in useful for future assignments
on your course  helped me loads

  • Joe Doughty I don't plan.just take each day as it comes

What I took from this was that most people used lists to help organise themselves
this was favourited in majority of anwsers others use daily charts, notebooks and
planners and some don't even plan! I found it really interesting to see the
variation in response as everyone has different ways of keeping schedule,
I particularly took interest in kealey's wall chart this is really clever as its
    reusable!

OUGD406 Brief 4, Research - Time Management

How to manage your time my efficiently

  • Avoid distractions and disruptions
  • Set goals
  • Take regular breaks
  • create a time plan
  • keep a to-do list
  • prioritise
By developing a regular routine you will find it harder to slip
between the lines, out of the list keep to do lists are very helpful
in setting your mind on important tasks. It also helps you become
more functional in completing priority work load.

To be more productive it is important to identify your are of weakness
and work on them for example distracted easily, remove all distractions
from the room such as phone, technology and even people if necessary.

The best way of organising your time is to create a time plan on what
you wish to complete over the day/week/month etc it gives you something
to follow and try to stick at by following your time plan you will
feel less stressed when you are on schedule.

I have looked at the university of Kents key to time management I also
found this article very interesting:

OUGD406 Brief 4, Initial Ideas

I have done a couple of ideas to get me started I tried my three main
concepts but felt the strongest of the three and most relevant to the brief
to appeal and help students was time management.

I have decided to create a small organiser in which will help improve
stress levels and effectively manage time also allowing rest.

OUGD406 Brief 4, Self Written Brief

To start this brief I felt I needed to write my own brief which asked
a question of which I can solve a problem too.

Brief

To create something that improves time management effectively for first year
students. Time management is a big problem for a majority of students, it is
hard to manage time without the correct resources. Your task is to create a
resource that helps students organise their time effectively and appropriately.

Considerations

Consider;
Portabillity
Effectiveness
Uses
Relevance

Explore your target audience
Look a relatable designs and wether it is appropriate?
Wether the product is viable and usable if produced?

OUGD406 - Brief 4, Mindmap

What have you learnt from your first year at university? How could
it of been improved?

This year I have learnt so many things on this course I think the most
important things I have or could of learned is to;

Pre book workshops (printing etc.)
Learning to screen print,
mono print
letter press
prepare for print
Opening times for college
Workshops available to me etc
organising time

I found a lot of these things important in the course and feel If I had been
guided or helped through this thoroughly I would of found the course less
stressful out of the list I feel the more important to me personally was;

Learning to screen print ( I found this super difficult to remember
so a guid would of been beneficial.)

Knowing the opening times ( Having a miniature guide would of been
helpful to carry round to know when college opened and closed aside
workshops in college.)

And Lastly Organising time ( At first I didn't know how to do this and it became
very stressful very quickly a memo pad or organiser would of helped me
to manage my time better.)

OUGD406 - Brief 4, Reflective Practice

OUGD406 - Brief 4, Reflective Practice

Produce a graphic response/ graphic product /piece of work that
makes a statement, comment, observation or gives advice about
your experience on your first year of this course.

Work with any appropriate media or format and develop and identify
the content will be entertaining, advisory or informative.

Considerations

Think about the new experiences that you have had, the difficulties
that you have overcome and the new people you have met and the
life skills you have acquired this year.

Remember what it was like starting your first week, how did you feel
and what emotions did you experience? Excitement, trepidation, fear
or did you feel overwhelmed. You might have benefited from some
advice, opinions and insight from others that have experienced the
same transition.

What might you say, do or give to next years graphic design students
to make the transition into the student experience, particularly this
course more welcoming?

Requirements

Enjoy the process of reviewing your year.
On going documentation on your blog.

Outcomes

Design development sheets, support work and notebooks.
Resolved design solutions in a format and media appropriate to your ideas.
Rationale and evaluation.
